Fun Ways To Celebrate National S'mores Day At Home With Kids

today is National S’mores Day. It’s also the peak season for campfires at the beach with your family and friends and, of course, s’mores. But let’s be real we’ve been cooking these up in our backyard oasis for the last 3 months and the kids love them. I’m so grateful for the lifting of restrictions here in BC so that we can start having more backyard get-togethers. If anything these past 17 months have taught me it’s, cherish the time with friends and family.

To celebrate National S’mores Day I've put together a few recipes that we love. Abi loves cooking with me as you know and for the other parents reading this these are some easy recipes to make and enjoy quality time with your kids.

Here's a pic of Abi, my daughter, enjoying smores

Don’t worry, none of the recipes includes starting a fire in your backyard but if you have grown-up kids that won’t run around in the whole backyard near the fire holding skewers while stabbing each other giving you mini heart attacks, by all means, go ahead. However, I think the mothers of little kids will prefer otherwise.

After all, you don't need a firepit to make s'mores because there are ways to make them at home. But it says ‘fun ways’ in the title so let’s add some summery, fruity twist to the marshmallows and make these easy marshmallows at home first. You can make these marshmallows ahead or the night before.

Summer Berry Marshmallows

Ingredients

2 envelopes gelatin

6 tbsp water

1 cup sugar

1⁄4 cup corn syrup or cane syrup

2 egg whites

1 tsp vanilla extract

1⁄2 cup icing sugar, for dusting

1⁄2 cup corn starch, for dusting

Preparation

  1. Thoroughly oil a Perfect Petites and place on a Sheet Pan.

  2. In a small bowl sprinkle gelatin over 1⁄4 cup water.

  3. Combine 2 tbsp water, sugar, and corn syrup in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, without stirring, and cook for 4 minutes.

  4. Using an electric mixer with the whisk attachment, whip egg whites on medium-high speed until stiff peaks are formed. Add in gelatin mixture and continue to beat until incorporated.

  5. Reduce the mixer speed and slowly pour in sugar syrup. Add Summer Berry Sweet Dip Mix and vanilla extract. Increase mixer speed to medium-high and continue to whip for 5 minutes. The mixture should be thick and slightly warm.

  6. Divide mixture into Perfect Petites. Set aside and allow to dry for 4 hours or overnight.

  7. Sift icing sugar and cornstarch together onto a work surface. Unmold marshmallows into sugar, rolling each one into the sugar mixture to coat.

Indoor S’mores

Now, let's talk about the ways you can make s’mores with these flavourful marshmallows at home. You can totally make these with your kids. Just assign the ‘arranging the s’mores on the tray’ job to your kids. If you have three kids as I do, one kid can place bottom cracker halves, one can place chocolate and one can place marshmallows or everyone can arrange their own s’mores. Just do however it suits your family and kids. Spend quality time with your kids and at the end, you will have ooey-gooey and melty s’mores to enjoy.

Soft Serve S’mores Chocolate Yogurt

Here’s a recipe if you are craving s’mores but strangely want them to be cold and in ice cream form but quicker. Why would you crave such an odd thing to eat? And from where did you get this strange idea in your mind you ask?. Well, I don’t know either. The human mind works in very astonishing ways and we should be prepared. You never know when you get in the dire need of this recipe.

This recipe doesn’t involve a stove or other heat source so it’s definitely a dish that you can make with your kids. Everyone can make their own bowl. You can also add any summer fruits you or your kids like. It will be refreshingly amazing. Furthermore, it will shut up that pesky old inner voice of ours that judges us every time we try to enjoy any delicious food.

Ingredients

1 cup plain yogurt

1⁄2 cup prepared Chocolate Fudge Sauce

1 1⁄2 graham cracker sheets, crumbled

30 miniature marshmallows

2 tbsp miniature chocolate chips

Preparation

  1. Combine all ingredients in an airtight freezer-proof container. Freeze for 30 minutes and serve immediately or freeze for at least 2 hours for a more solid consistency.

  2. Divide among Epicure Prep Bowls for individual portions.

Steamer S'mores

We did a classic version of s’more with a berry fruity twist and a cold version with soft-serve yogurt. Now it’s time to make a version to suit the upcoming weather known as fall.

Going along with today's theme, this recipe also is very easy to make which you can make with your kids.

Ingredients

1⁄2 cup butter

2⁄3 cup brown sugar

1⁄2 cup milk, your choice

1 tsp vanilla

1 1⁄2 cups graham cracker crumbs

1 pkg graham crackers

1 pkg mini marshmallows

1 pkg chocolate chips

Preparation

  1. In Multipurpose Pot, melt butter. Whisk in brown sugar, milk, and vanilla.

  2. Add graham cracker crumbs to the butter mixture. Stir until mixed.

  3. In Round Steamer, layer graham crackers. Cover with graham cracker batter. Add a layer of marshmallows. Sprinkle it with chocolate chips.

  4. Repeat to complete three layers in the steamer.

  5. In a preheated 350° F oven, bake for 16–20 min.

  6. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.

  7. Refrigerate for 1 hour, remove from the steamer and serve!

And that’s that for now. Wishing you a very chocolaty s’mores day. Try cooking with your kids. They will learn a lot about the ingredients and the cooking methods. They will learn to appreciate the cooked food as they will themself experience the hard work that goes into cooking. It will give them the confidence to cook and a sense of achievement when they will see the finished dish.
